If you have your own website, or even if you are only selling other vendors products you should be working on building an opt-in list of your own.

Building your opt-in list allows you to capture some of your advertising budget by letting you present offers to your subscribers for products or services you own or recommend.

Picture an opt-in list like this…

A magazine or newspaper ask people to subscribe to it’s media. Through this list of subscribers they are able to generate revenue for the business. For print media it’s not so much selling to subscribers but selling advertising to businesses based on the subscriber numbers.

On the internet it’s a more direct connection to the subscriber as also a potential buyer. But selling to a list is often not the best way to proceed. It’s much better to build a long term relationship with a list by offering quality advice or information that can translate into positive results for them before you present an offer for any product or service.

If you have started an opt-in list and find it’s not working very well for you then here are three quick and easy ways to get moving in the right direction.

1) Build trust. Having your subscribers trust you and your products is your first priority. Just launching your opt-in list will not make you an expert and a believable seller. There are a couple of things you can do to help establish yourself.

Writing and submitting articles in your field of expertise will help brand you as someone who has knowledge in their field. Write about the topic(s) you know, have started and used on your site. Try to put forums first to gain knowledge about your customers about their wants and needs and target those wants and needs.

Join forums from other sites as well. Listen to the concerns and problems others in the forum are having and try to provide relevant solutions for them. Providing expert advice and recommendations will garner you some visitors and eventually some fans. When you feel that people trust you already, you will be able to start your own opt-in list. You can build a base as well with other forum users. You can ask them to join your list. Friends are always good customers. After your first few post include a link to your site in your sig file so that they have a way to see what you’re business is all about.

2) Find a product or service that people want and need. Although it may not be your forte, if you provide a service and product that you have researched and learned about well, you can carry it on forward. Invest your time, effort and money that you could sell as well as the buyers or subscribers of your opt-in list can use.

While it is true that it is best to sell something that you have interest in, there are not many people who have the same interest as you if you decide to sell something that is not entirely popular or profitable. Do your research well and you would see the profits come in. Also provide your subscribers with promotional material that they could actually use and spread around.

3) Make friends with other opt-in list users. Ask for feedback and give subscribers an outlet to tell you aboutr their problems and concerns. This is basically beneficial especially if it is someone who has already launched a successful opt-in list. These are people that have the experience in this venture and experience is still the best teacher. While there are many articles available for you in the internet to use, there is nothing like getting a first hand account from someone you trust.

Experienced opt-in list users will be able to tell you what to do and what not to do because they have gone through it. While different situations occur for different people, the general concept can still be very helpful. There are many things to avoid and these people will be able to tell you which ones.

Building a profitable opt-in list doesn’t happen overnight. There are many preparations and effort to do. Opt-in lists are built from scratch, as your list grows, you should also maintain the quality of your list. Keep it organized and manageable. Get or hire help if need be, just make sure that your subscribers are happy and satisfied and they will be willing to buy from you.

The truth is, if you want to genreate revenue from your list, the money will only come in when your subscribers believe and trust in you. They want a product or service that could be a good exchange for their money. Generally speaking, people are not going to buy something out of your recommendation if they don’t know you.

Being active on forum communities by posting to other websites’ forums can be a powerful way to promote your website, but care must be used to not cross the unwritten boundaries. First, promoting your website in other peoples’ forums doesn’t mean spamming every forum you come across. Done properly, it is subtle and no-one will notice. In fact, the people who own the forums you are posting on will be pleased of an active member. Done incorrectly and everyone will complain and you will be booted off the forum.

So what shouldn’t you be doing on someone else’s forum? Unless the topic of a forum is ultra-relevant, you shouldn’t open new forum threads with the idea of promoting your web site. Moderators will quickly close the thread. If you suffer this too often, you will probably lose your membership.

You should also not be replying to open threads just with the intent of name dropping your website. This can also upset the moderators and they are likely to remove your site name and its links. They might even remove your posts and your logon.

So what can you do? If your web site is very relevant to the forum then you may be able to announce a new product within the forum. If in doubt, mention it first in an existing thread and see if anyone objects to you opening a new thread.

But the main time you can get a website mention is in open threads. Look for people asking questions and in need of some help that your site or your experience could provide for them. Maybe you offer accommodation around an event and they are looking for that. Or maybe they are looking for hard to find presents and you sell a suitable idea. A mention of your website name in these instances is (usually) allowable. If in doubt, just post the name of the website, not a hyperlink. You should be less likely to be accused of spamming this way.

Also, many forums allow you to use a signature in which you can mention your web site name. Or as part of your forum nickname maybe your web site name is relevant. If so, then try it out. I’ve seen both of these done well and no-one minds. In signatures, the forum may block the link to the website from the search engines, but whenever you are posting replies your signature is seen. If you are posting often and become seen as an “expert”, then it’s likely that people will want to read more about what you say and that’s when the signatures come in useful.

If you need loads of traffic and quickly, then PopUnders could be the answer to your dreams. Visitors direct to your site, from another relevant site. More to the point – do they actually work? Do they really drive more traffic to sites and is the traffic worth while? Do they convert to paying customers or traffic clicking on pay per click links?

This is the big question and one that I don’t really feel can be answered for any one site. In my experience they work for some sites, but not for all. I’ve had customers that love popunders and think they are great in the visitors that converts to sales that keep the businesses alive. But in the experience of other customers they don’t bring in any visitors.

Should these stories put you off from giving popunders a try? I think not. On the whole a trial campaign can give a lot of traffic for very little cost in real terms. It is well worth the small cost required to give popunders a trial and see if they work for you.
So what exactly are popunders? Very simply put, popunders are the display of your web site in a new window when a visitor enters a page on another person’s site. Popunder campaigns can start off as campaigns of 5,000 visitors and easily work up to 60,000 visitors or more, for an incredibly low cost.

The general idea is that popunders are displayed under the screen the visitor is currently browsing. They will then see it later, when they close the current window. They don’t always work this way - within a campaign large numbers of the people seeing your web site loading will just close the window down, maybe even before it fully loads.

There are a myriad of popup blockers around - built into browsers or as add ons in tool bars - but in a popunder campaign these shouldn’t (usually) count as they haven’t opened the screen.

For all of these problems, popunder campaigns are cheap and send a lot of traffic in a very short time. 2,000 - 3,000 visitors per day are easily possible. If you choose a reliable supplier, you can carefully match the category of the website showing your web site to your own website’s content.

For a small outlay you can rapidly boost your traffic in no time. As with other site marketing ideas, it’s not guaranteed that it will work for all websites and I’ve known customers who have had no success whilst others who’s businesses hinge on the results of popunder visitors.
