The Uses Of Promotional USB Flash Drives
A recent addition to the marketing budgets of many companies are custom flash drives. But just what exactly are flash drives and what can you do with them? Typically they are small, oblong devices about 4cm long, although there are a huge variety of shapes and sizes available. In capacity, USB flash drives vary from 32mb up to many gb, with even talk of a teradata flash drive being under development. Like floppy discs, they can usually be written to many times and can be moved between different computers as you wish. These USB drives are an excellent storage device, far better to use and carry about than floppy discs!
The flash drive connects to the machine via a USB connection. Just plug the USB flash drive into the computer and it will take all of the power it needs direct from the computer. But contrary to its name of a drive, a USB drive does not actually have any moving parts internally. Simply plug it into a spare USB port and pull out the flash drive when you have finished transferring files and clicking the stop icon.
Once you have plugged in a USB pen drive to a machine you can use it the same as you would a hard drive or a floppy disk. But compared to discs, USB flash drives have a far larger capacity and their smaller size make them easier to carry about. Many machines now no longer include a floppy disc drive because flash pen drives are becoming so popular and taking over from the need to have a floppy drive. You can create folders on the drive, organise your data, rename and delete odd files or the entire drive. Because of the way the data is stored internally, there is no need to defragment the drive when it has been used a lot, making it a lot more user friendly.
As with floppy discs, flash pen drives will usually have some sort of write protection switch. Once this switch has been set the USB pen drive will no longer allow you to write to it. This protects your data from accidental erasure. Once the data are finished with, or if you need to add more, just flick the switch again and you can delete, replace and add data to the USB pen drive once more.
If you want safe, reliable storage then USB pen drives are just that. They are resilient and survive being dropped and knocked and if your files are confidential in any way, it is possible to use encryption to protect the files on the drive from prying eyes. Some drives are very small, so you might prefer to add them to a key ring to reduce the risk of misplacing yours. They are so convenient, it’s not hard to see why custom flash drives are so popular in business.
